I had bought 6 tickets back when they went on sale shortly after they won the oscar for best song from the movie Once. I knew they'd go quick, and might be able to make a buck or two. So I had always planned on going with two of them. Home repairs took hold, expenses grew, so i sold them all. Fast forward to today. I looked on craigslist, and some guy was looking to get rid of his row B (read 2nd row) for whatever. I offered him face value, and met up in Plymouth in the Target parking lot. It was ironic, as later on during the show, Glen, the main guy from the band, mentioned how they had gone to this 'shop' earlier in the day called... and he paused... "Target." The crowd laughed a good bit, hometown mass retailer joke went over well!

Anywho. It's been a rough last two days for me. The show really made me smile when I needed it. I loved the movie, and the show was a very complimentary experience. I think it was my third favorite movie of last year. Juno was #1, Into the Wild #2, but I loved it. Reminded me of Lost In Translation in the sense that these characters were very rich, yet isolated and unnoticed by many. Both movies, the lead man and woman characters come to a glorious mutual bond/respect/love without any sort of traditional romantic payoff which I think is REALLY cool...

Anywho, not sure where i'm going with this. I think it had something to do with the fact that Glen talked and talked from the heart, and was insanely genuine in both his performance and his words. He talked about the disconnect between the head and the heart and how it can get people in trouble, one often outpacing the other to the detriment of both, and how different people are prone to different bumps in the road along the way depending on which of those two factors is stronger.

I haven't been to a show in too long. Sadly I went to this one solo, all my potential hot dates had prior engagements or already decided that my head heart disconnect was a little too distant. Oh well... Next up, either tuesday night summer league or perhaps Flight of the Conchords. Not gonna lie, row B at the orpheum for a fantastic show was pretty cool. Might just be worth missing the first night of summer league. Is it Business time?

In other news, during the time it took me to put this shoddy blog entry together, I've won $165 in online poker. WOOT!
Super Blind

so i played poker yesterday and did horribly.

The game was structured poorly, and I had very little to do with the structure, but it essentially had a double blind. there was no small blind or big blind--just two blinds of the same amount... so i took to calling the big blind position the super blind. anywhow, i got sucked into stupid poker and lost money. My bad... moving on

I went to the vikings game today with dougie and cory, and we had a fantastic time. The game couldn't have gone any better for the home team as far as I could tell. Very nice. Anyhow, after the game, we went back to Huberts which is strangely enjoyable for having no ambiance other than proximity to the metrodome. Over made up women and over sports out dudes.... but again, strangely enjoyable. So eventually Jason goes to the Wild game to complete his all sports weekend, and Cory and I walk across downtown wandering in search of food...

...and eventually I meet up with Peter and his co-worker and her daughter at the Brave Combo concert. I think this is the fourth time I've seen them, all in December, taking place likely four times over the past five or six years. The first time I saw them, it was at First Ave, and that was fantastic....

Last year, it was at the Cedar Cultural Center which is an admirable yet strange venue.... didn't love the show...

This year, I was a bit lubed up on arrival due to the vikings game, but that only proved to enhance the experience. I'm a big fan of dancing alone in my living room and in the car to a cranked song, but leary of dancing in a crowd....

Eleanor (who is Liz's daughter) was a great dance partner... and I stumbled into another more eligible (semmingly) bachelorette and had a phenominal time dancing the night away... but after cutting a serious rug etc... found out that my dance hall crashing partner was married.... and a lot older than I would have ever imagined to be.

Both of these things were shocking, and the former saddening, as i'm not out to steal a married chick, but anyhow....

Brave Combo is amazing.

Next up, Lemonheads Dec 10 @ The Varsity Theatre

Varying Degrees of Epiphany

So I've had a lot of stuff go down in the last few weeks. I had a few thoughts awhile back that I meant to put down and sorta draw out all the wonderful things going on... but I think i was a little too high on life to focus my energies...

Anyhow...

A few things bullet style

-Saw the movie "Into the Wild"
-saw the movie "Control"
-saw Cloud Cult live on a weekday for free at the Varsity
-watched "Batman Begins" again
-got a new job that is so far quite interesting, and has room for upward mobility
-got a new ipod
-Lisa had a kid

These all are/were/continue to be fantastic in their own strangely unique and personal ways.

I have no unifying thoughts. Not much to comment on, but I did go running again today. Didn't make it quite the same distance as the other day sadly, but was having some shoe troubles. I had worn the low top addidas basketball type shoes the other day, and had some discomfort, but decided to wear my nike air max 180 shoes today to see how that would be... and it wasn't what i'd hoped for. I think i'll go back to the adidas tomorrow.

Played poker last night with Bill, Kevin, Reed, Dave and Mike... and it was fun. 4 3 off-suit is a good hand.

I'm back! (hopefully--hehe)

Two months and 4 days later, I've decided to rekindle my blog posting. I've undergone a lot of change since then, and think and hope it's for the better. As some of you know, my job was driving me nuts. I perhaps mentioned it to a few of you about... well... eleven million times, and for that I apologize. While I didn't fundamentally dislike the job, the hours were brutal, and were about to send me to the funny farm permanently. It wasn't so much the amount, but the times of the day, and the irregularity of them. I was tired of missing out on ultimate, friends, concerts, and just general social life items... so on March 8th, I gave notice that I'd be leaving at the end of the month, and used my last three vacation days March 29, 30, and 31st and bowed out at 2am the night of Wednesday March 28th.

I have no grand plan, but hope to get a job in the near future with some sort of M-F 9-5ish type schedule where overtime is either A: greatly appreciated or B: paid at time and a half! Maybe I'll get a serving job once or twice a week to supplement my income and my social outlets, and to just stay fresh in the restaurant biz, but who knows.

This past Monday I met my parents in South Carolina where we flew into in order to go watch Tuesday's practice round in Augusta, GA for the Master's Golf Tournament. That was cool to go check out, and as my dad said, I guess I've been to the two most famous golf courses in the world in St. Andrews Scotland, and at Augusta National for the British Open and the Master's respectively.

I plan on venturing out a little more to see a few more things while on this mini-vacation of unemployment I'm on. I've had a hankering to go to Buenos Aires for a while now, as we fly there, and I could use Spanish, and the weather would be nice and whatnot. I may give up a few less shifts at the airport in the near future to get me up in the morning and to make a few bucks, but mostly I just plan to reinvestigate how great it is to be an airline employee for an airline who will fly you across the globe for pennies, most of the time in First Class sipping gin and tonics etc...

I've also decided that I want to play ultimate again at a higher level than I did last year. I went on a 1.5 mile run today which was good to get out, and surprisingly painless until I realized I had been running for the most part downwind for the first 40% or so of my run... but it was still good. Tomorrow I'm joining Mike for the first practice of the season for Armstrong HS' ultimate team at 10:35am... Should be good to help him help them get into shape and what not for the upcoming HS season. It will be nice to resume my participation in a high school coaching role with a good friend and an eager bunch of kids.

Otherwise, Song of the indefinite time period of the recent past and near future is Keep the Car Running by Arcade Fire. Album of the same time period is Putting the Days to Bed by The Long Winters. Good concerts I've seen in the last bit have been The Long Winters, Badly Drawn Boy, The Hopefuls, Action vs Action, Mason Jennings, and Vicious Vicious...

I think that's about it for now. Hopefully more to come soon!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://twokseleven.blogspot.com/2007/04/im-back-hopefully-hehe.html' title='I'm back! It's really weird to try and explain to people who don't know ultimate that A: I'm going to vegas, and B: it's not just cuz I want to gamble or debauch myself, or who knows what else.

I arrived into town on standby on a different airline than the one I work for, which was a great deal, and worked out timing-wise with work and all, but it's always a little stressful not knowing whether or not I'm going to get a seat on the plane...

Met up with Alicia and Sam at the airport around 11pm PST and we were fairly promptly picked up by Paul and Katy. Great times there reliving the glory days of Moe O-line... We arrived into our hotel, the Plaza, around midnight if I had to guess. The plaza is an old place situated near the 'old strip' as someone said to me. I'm not too knowledgeable as to the dynamics of new/old vegas, but we drove through some questionable areas to get there. No worry, soon enough, I met up with Reed and played some 1/2 no limit, quickly going up $110 and leaving the table to retire for the evening. While I enjoy the high I felt taking down a decent chunk of change, it is somewhat scary looking across the table at some of my opponents and wondering what sort of financial destitution they're in as I take pot after pot. Oh well. If it wasn't me, I guess they would have squandered it soon thereafter to someone else, but it was a bit of a struggle...

Got up the next morning and drove out to the fields. We had 4 Moes (Mike, Shwa, Tom, Sam), 4 former moes (Paul, Reed, Alicia, and Katy), and 5 other friends of Paul from various locale. It was an interesting team dynamic, as the other 5 had considerable experience, but some were probably about as stubborn as I am, and I might even say more so as to their thoughts on how the game should be played. Final word on that is that it was GREAT to play with Paul, Reed, Alicia, Katy, Mike, Shwa, and Sam all on one field again!

We ended up going 3-1 in our pool of 5 teams (15 total mixed teams). We lost on double game point to a team made up of dudes from Metal and women from SLC. I heard that they met up last year and played together when the dudes posted on RSD asking if there were a group of women willing to join them for the tourney... Sounds like they had a good time, as they did it again this year. Cool concept. Maybe I'll be fortunate enough to try it sometime.

Saturday night party at the Stratosphere (vegas version of the space needle) was kinda cool in that we were in a really swank bar that purportedly had free booze for us, but in the end was a bit of a bust. We hung there for about an hour or so, before we realized we weren't going to get any free drinks as the system was flawed monumentally... Oh well. We retired to our hotel for the most part and split up into different groups. I went and played Poker again, ending up another $75 at Binnions (same as last night) before going back to the hotel. I found Reed and Leo (very neat and chill guy on our team from LA) at the tables in our hotel at the Plaza. I decide to sit down and there is a scary drunk looking dude. Needless to say, I started playing against him rather than playing my cards, and I ended up giving a lot of money to Reed. Oh well... Good times overall at poker.

Top 2 teams in each pool made it to the championship bracket, putting 4 teams into a quarterfinal/pre-semi type game with 2 teams jumping right into semis. Too bad we lost by one, as we would have made it to semis with a Sunday start time of 12 noon. As is, we started at 10:30, and ended up losing to the Princeton alum team featuring a decent number of pretty good players , Bailey Russel from Metal/Pike and the Count from DOG. We kinda dug ourselves a hole, and the interpersonal dynamics of the team that were already shaky digressed into decent sized madness. Lots more yelling at ones own teammates than I'd ever care to do especially at a 'fun' tourney. We lost, and somewhat recovered our sense of reality, as we played a 5th place game against a team from the east coast made up of a bunch of people Mike knows, and ended up taking the relatively easy and fun victory...

Pretty cool time overall. Competition not great, but really didn't matter. I'd like to return next year and maybe go with about 12 of 'us' instead of not knowing a bunch of people. our 8 guys and 5 women were plenty of numbers.

I didn't get to see the Belagio up close and personal. That was my only regret. I didn't go to any stripclubs or brothels out in the desert, but that's probably ok.

Winter Mixer up this weekend. More to come on that I'm sure!

MLK

Cake or Death was victorious this year at MLK for the first time in awhile. I'm not sure how long it's been, but I know we've lost to Madison two years running (the first year after a monster upset of the Sub squad).

Good times had by all. We stayed at the Motel 6 for the second year. This year we only had eight dudes (instead of ten last year) in the room for $29.99 + tax. Bed costs were drastically up from last year's five spot to $7. I don't know if we'll be able to get to nationals after this monstrous expense. Best room ever for an enormous floor contingent.

Feldman nearly won the poker extravaganza two years running, only to be outdone by rediculous cards from Pat's friend Dan.

Day one saw us playing the GAC alum crowd featuring former Moe Rob Williams. We beat them 13-6 or so in a highly contested game, err... I mean not too highly contested game of warm-up ultimate. Glad to see my younger gac alum former teammates are still reveling in their mediocrity and having as much fun as we did back then. I think the highlight of this game was the no warmup and driving into the place about 10 minutes before game time when Becky calls and asks where we were. Mike tells him we were about 30 miles out and they should be fine without us for a few points. HEHE...

Game two was against St. Cloud featuring the throw to naz, some other guy, naz, some other guy, naz, some other guy, naz... HUCK... Turn (pat, ben, mike, shwa, crotchy, etc. D)... we score. I think it was 13-4.

Game three was against Madison. They had a smaller squad with fewer nationally known names than previous incarnations of their MLK squad, but they were not to be looked past by any means. About half Madhous guys, half other Madison club guys, they got it going, and took a two or three point lead on us midway through the game, only to have us catch up to tie it at eleven. Not sure what happened, if we pulled or received, but I seem to recall we then petered out and lost the next two to take the loss 11-13.

Since we took second in the pool, we had a bye till 7:30 where we faced TBA. We had nearly two hours in between games since we finished all of our earlier pool games so quickly outside of the Madison game, that half the team decides to go find food... and not show up till after 7:30. The five of us remaining (me, Ben, Moss, Guy, Crotchy) decide to push on and start out the game on defense. We go zone not knowing how long we'd have to play savage, and have our zone shredded like we were nubes as our teammates stroll in the door. Thankfully, they did show up, as TBA played a hard fought game with very few unforced errors (at least a lot more than I'd expect with some of our defenders). It was close almost the whole way till we pulled away to win 13-9 or 10. Hats off to TBA for taking it hard to us well into the game.

This ends our Saturday, leaving food, beer, and the motel 6 to be found. In a comedy of errors, we eventually get a table at the third bar we go to who is ultimately able to accommodate us with food, drink, and football games on TV. I had no idea this combo would be so hard to find on a Saturday night in Duluth. We learned about how scary WoW is, and how cool Ben and Moss are, and how cool Shwa used to be before he was able to run away from it all...

Eventually we get back to the room. Mike, Jake and I shotgun a sweet sweet Miller Lite (and by the three of us, I mean them two as I SUCK at shotgunning)... play some poker, have a few more beers, and eventually attempt to go to bed around 1:30 when all hell breaks loose. What happens in Duluth stays in Duluth, but if you want to know more, ask Feldman.... Good times!

Day two finds us playing against Dingpoop. When we flipped, I asked jokingly if they planned on picking up all of the random other good Duluth players that were on different teams who didn't make semis, and they very seriously replied, no, not all of them, just four of them. To my way of thinking, kinda lame, but it kinda fired me up to take it to 'em. Best line of the day was Jobramowski saying on the line at zeroes, "They're probably gonna kick our ass." Mike had already puked twice, and Shwa wasn't necessarily feeling too hot as the lone Motel 6er to attend the tourney party... and Becky had apparently had quite an evening also... so who knew, maybe Joe was right... or maybe just a negative nancy...

Cake or Death 7-2 at half. HA! Not sure what the final score was, but they rattled off a few more... maybe 13-6? Not too exciting, but everyone played pretty decent considering hangovers and lack of interest...

Finals was against Madison. I don't remember the scoring breakdown other than we went up 7-3 at half, traded the next three to 10-6 and won 13-8. I do however remember Pat skying the SHIT out of a few dudes and mike coming way up and over a guy for a score from the hammer from Ben....

Good times had by all. I've been to this tourney 9 years in a row. By far and a way my personal record for attendance.

With any luck, we'll continue our stand as best non-practicing men's winter team in early 2007 when we retake the field Feb 17 at my tourney at the YWCA...

-tom
